Why do we end up sleeping less as we age?
Research is showing that people over the age of 43 often have trouble falling asleep, wake up more often throughout the night, and have less deep sleep which in turn affects their recovery.
The vital type of sleep that the body needs to heal, repair and restore from all its daily activity and functions.
The reason for this can actually be quite simple. As we have mentioned many times here at the Recovery Room, your body is very good at telling you when something isn’t optimal. Many times when we have a problem, the fix can be a simple deficiency in an important Vitamin, Mineral or Antioxidant your body needs for optimal function.
Studies are also showing that many of us are losing our ability to dream efficiently.
Even though you may not remember all your dreams.. Just know that your brain must dream every night to fall asleep!
Most importantly, dreams help your brain and body transition into the deepest and most crucial part of your recovery sleep.
As we age, the creative (Dream Creation & Memory Recall) part of the brain shrinks.
This part of the brain is known as the prefrontal cortex, this part of the brain allows us to dream vividly and thus enter the deepest stages of sleep each night.
This is where the brain shrinkage may begin to occur. The brain will start to have difficulties creating dreams like we once could.
That is why as we get older people start to sleep less and less. This can then obviously lead to severe fatigue the next morning and can even cause short and long term memory issues. Something maybe as simple as where we placed our wallet or keys.)
Beyond memory loss, we end up waking up with feelings of anxiety and a racing heart which can actually carry over into the next night and hinder sleep even more.
However, sleep experts recently discovered that it might have nothing to do with our age and more of a deficiency of a very important mineral!
They discovered that there is one very important sleep mineral our body is severely lacking as we age. Much of this can be attributed to the mineral-depleted foods that we are consuming that the food industry has been selling us for years.
Without this mineral our brain health can deteriorate, and our body will find it even more challenging to produce the sleep hormones we need.
This mineral is…? Maybe you guessed it. Its Magnesium. Research is now showing Magnesium may help with insomnia symptoms!
Sleep experts recommend adults take in 300 to 420 milligrams of magnesium daily. There is many powder forms available also that you can take 30 minutes prior to going to sleep.
You can find magnesium naturally in many foods, including:
- Leafy green vegetables, such as spinach or swiss chard
- Nuts, legumes, and seeds, including cashews, almonds, peas, and beans
- Yogurt and milk
- Tofu, soy milk, and other soy products
- Whole grains, like brown rice
You can also find magnesium in fortified foods. Many breakfast cereals have added magnesium.
Of course at Recovery Room we offer high grade pharmaceutical Magnesium that we can administer to any IV that we offer. Our favorite IV’s for an extra boost of Magnesium is our Meyers Cocktail, and our Clear My Mind IV for headaches.
